"We are Waltham Forest"

Letter
calling for support against the EDL

Dear Friend,

As you may be aware, the racist English Defence League (EDL) is planning a provocative demonstration in Walthamstow on 27th October with the aim of stirring up race hatred in our community.

We Are Waltham Forest, a broadly-based campaign, has been set up on the initiative of Unite Against Fascism, Waltham Forest Trades Council and other groups in the community to mobilise against the EDL. I am writing on their behalf to ask for your support.

The campaign is planning to hold a counter protest in Walthamstow against the EDL on the 27th October.

We have produced a statement opposing the EDL protest that I hope you will encourage your activists and members to sign. We are putting on stalls around the borough to raise awareness of the EDL and what they stand for and the need to stand against them. I hope that you will inform your members about these activities and encourage them to take part.

If we are going to be able to challenge the EDL effectively we need money to produce publicity, pay for meeting rooms and hire a stage and PA for the counter-protest on the 27th October. I hope that your branch will consider making a financial donation and/or asking your regional political fund to do so if possible.

Cheques should be made payable to "Waltham Forest UAF" and sent to "We Are Waltham Forest" c/o Gerard Lyons, 42 Bateman Road, Chingford, E4 8ND.

Yours in solidarity,

Tony Phillips,
On behalf of "We Are Waltham Forest"
